Herman's Cave and Blue Hole National Park
Spiritwind Reef Resort offers several excellent educational adventures into the beautiful and unspoiled Rainforests of Belize. One of our best (and easiest) is Blue Hole National Park.

We travel the scenic Hummingbird Highway past picturesque mountain villages, to the park entrance. The park ranger on duty directs us down the trail for the approximately 1 mile nature walk to the "Blue Hole". Along the way, we stop to explore Hermans' Cave, illuminated by the light of our headlamps. At the end of the jungle trail we come to the namesake of the park... the Blue Hole. This spectacular azure pool is formed by the sudden upwelling of Caves Branch River from deep underground. The icey waters make for a refreshing swim; much welcomed after your first Jungle Walk.

The pool is filled with freshwater fish, and the surrounding jungle is filled with birds and animals of all kinds. The trees are festooned with Orchids, Bromeliads and other epiphytic plants. An easy, fun and educational experience for the entire family.

Boccawina National Park
Another fine educational Rainforest Adventure is Boccawina Park. We begin the adventure just a few miles south and west of Spiritwind Reef Resort, at the Mayflower Mayan Ruins. These mostly overgrown ruins are a ghostly reminder of a long forgotten empire. We then trek up the hillside to BOCCAWINA FALLS. An invigorating shower in the tumbling waters will reward you after your up-hill walk.

You will likely see Parrots, Toucans, Oropendulas and many other species of Rainforest Birds, as well as butterflies of every description and hue.

This is an easy trek and climb for anyone in good physical condition, and should be enjoyed by everyone. A tour of Hopkins Village and the local Garifuna Artists is included in this jungle adventure.

Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Sanctuary
This is a rare and beautiful rainforest experience. We begin the adventure with a visit to the village of Maya Center, south of Spiritwind Reef Resort. Here you can see (and purchase) many beautiful and unique Mayan art and craft items. Nearby, you may be privileged to see Mayan women washing their laundry on the river rocks, as they have done for thousands of years. There is also a small tropical butterfly farm beside the river, where you may get up-close and personal with some of our living jewels of the air.
We then travel by rainforest road, six miles deep into the lush tropical jungle. This is an incredible drive... the winding road lined with orchids, bromeliads, and giant ferns as big as trees! And anywhere, at any time you may see the King of the forest... the majestic Jaguar, as it dashes across the road! We will stop along the way to explore some of the jungle trails, in search of the abundant birds and wildlife of the area. After lunch on the park grounds, we carry our Inner Tubes down the river trail, where we enter a crystal clear jungle stream, for a leisurely float through the verdant rainforest. This is an experience not to be missed!

Scarlet Maccaw Expedition
For this premium rainforest adventure we travel to the village of Redbank, for a full day jungle expedition in search of the beautiful and endangered SCARLET MACCAW. This is a "must do" adventure for any serious bird watcher or naturalist, because the indigenous birdlife here is incredible, in addition to the awesome spectacle of seeing FLOCKS Scarlet Maccaws circling the skies. This full day adventure is a once in a lifetime experience for the dedicated birder... or anyone else with a sense of wonder and adventure.

Belize Zoo and Cave Tubing... Ultimate Adventure
Perhaps one of the best educational experiences offered by Spiritwind Reef Resort is our Belize Zoo and Cave Tubing Adventure.

After an early morning drive through the scenic Maya Mountains, we visit the world famous BELIZE ZOO, where we can take a close look at some of Belize's most important and endangered birds and animals. Here the rare and beautiful Black Jaguar, Howler Monkey, Jabiru Stork, Scarlet Maccaw and many other birds and animals can be viewed in "natural" enclosures.

After we leave the zoo, we trek through lush tropical jungle to the Caves Branch River. Here we enter the cool river with our inner tubes to float, both above and below ground, through stalactite filled caverns (illuminated by our head-lamps) and out into verdant tropical ravines, where sunlit be-jeweled butterflies fill the air.

This is a "once-in-a-lifetime" exciting and educational adventure, you will long remember!
